Parrot sanctuary launch foreign language guide

Multilingual pupils from Hayle Community School have helped launch new foreign language audio guides, which they produced, of Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary.

The year 10 and 11 pupils from the specialist language college teamed up with park managers to develop the guides which will now be available to the parks 100,000 visitors each year.

The guides are available in French, Spanish and German and are made from the pupils’ perspective.  They provide a commentary on the animals and birds on display as well as the facilities at the park.

Paradise Park is one of twelve businesses in the South West to sign up to the Business Language Champions initiative, which the Regional Language Network hopes will encourage students to continue to study foreign languages and realise the practical benefits in business.

David Woolcock, curator of Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary, and a trustee of the World Parrot Trust, explained his reason for getting involved in the initiative:

“Part of the work we do at Paradise Park involves protecting rare and endangered species from other parts of the world and so good language skills are vital.  At home, the park is a tourist attraction and therefore we have visitors from a number of different countries.

“We are delighted to able to work with the school on a project which reinforces for the students the importance of foreign languages and, with the production of the CD, will enhance the experience for foreign visitors to Paradise Park.”
