The David Bellamy Conservation Awards, are designed to highlight parks which make a special effort to protect and enhance the natural world.
"Many of these winners have created incredible wildlife wonderlands for holidaymakers to enjoy, and which are especially important for teaching youngsters about conservation," said Professor Bellamy. "I've frankly been amazed at some of the initiatives I've found, and it's time these parks were given the credit they deserve," he added.
As well as more familiar measures such as establishing wildlife habitats and planting indigenous trees, David Bellamy looks at all aspects of a park's policies - from the printing of its brochure on paper from sustainable resources, to the use of shielded lighting so that visitors can enjoy the night sky.
Holiday parks to have been awarded accolades include larger family-style parks as well as those tucked away in quiet corners of the countryside. Much more important than the park's size is the degree of responsibility it takes for careful environmental management, believes Professor Bellamy.
Parks wishing to enter for a David Bellamy award must first complete a detailed questionnaire describing what positive conservation steps they have taken.
Next, the park must receive an independent endorsement from a local wildlife or conservation body which is familiar with the area - and distribute special questionnaire postcards to customers which are returned directly to Professor Bellamy to help with his assessment of the awards.
The twelve-year-old scheme continues to gather pace as more parks each year enter for the award - but the stakes are being raised all the time. David Bellamy is keen to throw down more challenges similar to those he has introduced in the past, such as encouraging parks to establish butterfly gardens, build willow sculptures, carry out ladybird audits and to give special attention to educating children.
