The Spirit of West Cornwall

Mystery, imagination and romance are the touchstones of the Land's End Peninsula, a haunting mix generated by the area's stunning natural beauty and by the sense of timelessness that clings to lonely moorland and to the spectacular cliffs of the Atlantic coastline. On these ancient Celtic hills and rocky headlands you find a closeness to the elements that will inspire and refresh the most jaded.

Across this superb landscape are scattered some of the finest ancient monuments in Europe. Amongst these are the 5,000 year old Lanyon Quoit, with its tall granite pillars and enormous capstone, and the Bronze Age stone circle known as The Merry Maidens near Lamorna. Fanciful legends were attached to these enigmatic stones by later generations; but their real use was for the colourful and earthy rituals and ceremonies of ancient people whose spirituality and whose entire culture were drawn directly from nature. In West Cornwall, when you stand at the stone circles of Boscawen-Un near St Buryan, or at the Merry Maidens, you cannot help but feel the power of the mysterious earth force to which these ancient ones paid homage.

Don't miss the fairytale castle of St Michael's Mount, or the open air theatre at the 'playing places' such as the Plen-an-Gwary near St Just. Around St Just and Pendeen handsome granite mine stacks have been preserved sympathetically by the National Trust, who also restored Levant Mine which can be seen 'in steam' in summer. A few minutes walk away is Geevor, the largest preserved mining site in England offering underground tours and family activities.

In West Cornwall you will find time and inspiration with which to rediscover the self, to seek spiritual regeneration and to escape the pressures of modern life. Free the spirit and rediscover yourself through experiencing the soul of this unforgettable western land.
